Announcing the Zivity Artist Guide!

One of the most common questions we hear here at Zivity HQ is ”How do I get my sets rated at Editor’s Picks?” The answer is that it all comes down to photographic quality. Having well-composed, color-corrected, competently-lit photos is enough to get a set rated Noteworthy. On top of that, compelling storytelling, interesting location and evocative mood are some examples of what helps to determine Editor’s Picks.

In an effort to help folks understand what we look for when we moderate sets, and provide a path to improvement, we decided to compile some photography/modeling tips and tricks. When we discovered the woeful lack free resources on quality nude photography, the project turned into something bigger. Announcing the Zivity Artist Guide!

Illustrated with photos by Zivity artists, and drawing from dozens of photography books spanning different genres, this guide covers techniques that anyone can master. We’ve purposefully tried to keep the guide non-technical, because we believe that mastering color, composition, and mood by far outweighs the importance of gear when it comes to creating beautiful work. Although much of this advice seems photographer-centric at first glance, a lot of it applies to the model’s craft. For example, understanding negative space can help you come up with more interesting poses.

There are tons of sites featuring pretty ladies that don’t place any emphasis on - or worse, actively discourage - creative experimentation. At Zivity, we want to take a different path. We want Zivity to be a site celebrates all body type in truly beautiful photography. We hope that our new Artist Guide provides a solid foundation for creating stunning, provocative work.

The Artist Guide needs your voice.

We want this guide to be helpful not only to Zivity artists, but to the larger photographer/model community. We also want this guide to have a unique Zivity flavor. It needs your voice.

We want to expand the guide to include quotes from Zivity artists, linking to their profiles. This way, you can help to participate in the creation of a useful resource, and promote your work at the same time. Whether you’re a model or a photographer, we want your top tips on any topic, from practicing facial expressions to shooting in abandoned buildings. Submit your tip

What’s an example of a good tip? Keep it short, simple andto the point. For example, when I (Nadya) recently shot my first Zivity set, I was unhappy with how distracting the wrinkles on the blanket appeared. A photographer friend said to me: “the next time you shoot a model on top of the bed, put a large piece of cardboard underneath the bed cover. It’ll prevent the bed from looking wrinkly, and the model will have an easier time posing on top of it.” Short, specific sound tips such as this are the way to go. The deadline for submitting tips is April Friday, 25th, and the tips will appear on the page in early May.

Get Inspired

Another way you can improve your craft is by learning from the masters. In addition to creating the Artist Guide, we’ve relaunched our Pinterest to include tons of inspiring work. Get to know or revisit the greats: Helmut Newton, Ellen Von Unwerth, Guy Bourdin, Sarah Moon, and others. Get inspired by contemporary photographers such as Solve Sundsbo, Ellen Rogers and Craig McDean. Find color palette inspiration for your next shoot, and drool over Wonderful Wardrobe. Got suggestions on things to pin? Send them our way. Follow us on Pinterest for more inspiration in the months to come.

In conclusion

We hope that the Artist Guide, serve to illuminate and inspire. We can’t wait to see what you do next.
